A Card from the Accused Poormaster,
lrondequoit, March 15, 1870
Misours, Editors: -- In the Union of last evening there appeared an article announcing the death of Lawrence Doerrer, in the town of lrondequoit; and reflecting on the inhuman conduct of the Overseer of the Poor of said town, as expressed by the coroner's jury in the case. Now, gentlemen, I was for the last year the Overseer alluded to, and I pronounce emphatically and without reserve, every statement, whether given to the jury or not, as they appear in your issue, false in their whole length and breadth. So far from not aiding Doerret and his family when called upon, I allowed him $1.50 per week, together with firewood. He was visited by Drs. Smyles and Kulchling, who pronounced him incurable, and his death to be expected at any time. I offered to take him to St. Mary's Hospital, as recommended by Dr. Smyles, where he thought he would have better attendance and be made much more comfortable. In a word, I did everything that I considered it my duty to do. I never used the language ascribed to me, and 1 am ready to make an affidavit to the fact, The whole thing is a monstrous and malicious slander of the old woman --the only witness examined in the matter -- because I would not supply her without stint everything she wanted, among the rest whisky. Of the five children three earned wages every week, and perhaps enough to support the whole family. You will please, therefore, publish this my defense, and set me right before the public.
I am, very respectfully, yours,
GOTTLEIB APPEL
